LAB 300 (ICM-DIVACE) FEATURES & BENEFITS – AT-A-GLANCE
IN THE LAB 300 ENVIRONMENT, YOU OPTIMIZE THE USE OF ANY MEDIA
In the Lab 300 LAN, the Media Assistant Duo is the student user interface under the supervision of a teacher-controlled
audio/video/data audio hub.
• The Lab 300 hub incorporates all of the capabilities of a language-study-specific learning laboratory, including student
grouping for tasks and conferences; pairing for role-playing exercises; teacher administered oral and multiple-choice testing;
and the means to manage media and user resources via an integrated database.
• The audio hub includes the capability to transfer a variety of analog/digital audio/video/data lessons to students and groups;
plus instructor-to-student/group/class, audio communication via headset.
• An easy-to-use interface facilitates programming, control, and operating the lab in every function.
• The integrated Library Pilot database tracks student progress, lab ID numbers, workstation visits, and handles a multitude of
administrative tasks.
• Library Pilot is fully developed, integrated, and export and import compatible with mainstream database applications. The
database provides listings and information by students, course, and teacher. Attendance logs and start-up settings with eight
standard and five advanced preferences, are standard features.
• When student names are associated with the workstation, the system offers a notepad that is accessed through the student
panel display. Notes may be added randomly and may be saved to a separate student file as appropriate.
• When the lab incorporates Library Pilot Server-Client packages and a user logs on in the lab, user initials appear on the
student icon at the audio hub. With the client package, lab administrators need not log on individuals before they begin to work,
but do retain control of the workstation.
• Student-workstation association may be changed/added/re-logged at any time, at the discretion of the instructor. Students
doing make-up work, for instance, in otherwise unoccupied workstations may be logged on to the system and tracked as
above.
• The instructor may set as many as five student groups to receive – simultaneously – four lessons from the console or to allow
students to work independently, all at your discretion, all under instructor control.
• The Lab 300 tool bar may be customized to display only those icons that are preferred by the teacher. The teacher has easy
access to the tasks he or she uses most often and needs to access quickly.
• An ON/OFF selection lets the instructor temporarily move all students in the class to Group A. When you want to start all
students on one task, then let them work within a group (such as, pairing, group conferencing, or library/free) you may select
this feature, launch the file, and then return the students to their groups by de-selecting the feature.
• When the class is in groups, there’s no limiting of the functions for any group. You have every lab function – including call,
monitor, intercom, record, and student recorder control – with every group and each student.
• The Lab 300 provides matrix program distribution to an individual or group. Lesson sources may be assigned to
groups/individuals or the individuals/groups may be assigned to the lesson source
• Each lesson source channel accommodates the transfer of any lesson sources connected within the system.
• A NEW button in the group control panel launches a new file to all student Lab 300 media assistants in the group, quickly
getting the group on to the next task.
• Student pairing – student pair selections are fixed, made by you, or randomly by the system – in a pair or small groups of three
or four students.
• The system allows any user to choose stereo or monaural playback.
• The instructor may allow students to self-pair by using the “telephone” function. Students “dial” another student recorder
through their media assistant’s user interface.
• The single-key EDIT function lets the teacher intersperse commentary on a lesson file by automatically pausing the program
source and activating the teacher microphone.
• During the administration of true-false, multiple-choice, or oral examinations administered from the teacher console, student
responses are automatically recorded or compiled and analyzed for immediate feedback to the teacher.
• Test responses are saved by individual and course, and multiple-choice test results may be viewed/printed.
• All student oral responses may be collected and compiled in MP3 format.
• The instructor may digitize/reformat analog/digital program sources or other files in .wav or .mp3 format at the console and
store and access the files by instructor-determined criteria to/from the media warehouse server.
• All audio is channeled through the student media assistant, and any audio from a source (computer, VCR, videodisc, DVD,
etc.) at the student position is available for recording.
• Students use a single headset to listen/record to any digital or analog recorder (including computer) at the workstation, or to
hear and respond to any program from the console.
• Lab 300 CSSNet incorporates screen transfer/sharing and remote control of workstation computers. Teachers have all of the
capabilities/functions available with the audio system. This includes multiple grouping, multiple lesson transfer, student lock
out, student screen darken, keyboard control, single key monitoring, simultaneous keyboard/mouse/application control. The
following features are included:
– Send teacher screen to an individual, group, or entire class.
– Send model student screen to individual, group, or class. The student’s audio is transferred simultaneously.
– Automatic screen scanning for a settable time period, by group or class.
– Individual screen monitoring offers collaboration or control functions to the instructor.
In collaboration, the instructor shares the mouse/keyboard functions while in audio communication.
In control, the instructor assumes total control of the student’s keyboard and mouse.
– Teacher may pass control of another student’s mouse/keyboard to other students.
– Teacher may display thumbnail views of student computer screens at the console.
• From the thumbnail view, individual students may be selected for monitor-intercom-control by a double click.
• Within the CSSNet, instructors may remotely control student audio/video/data workstations – whether by individual, group, or
the entire class – to:
– Launch the student Media Assistant by individual, group, or entire class.
– Launch a document at the student workstation by individual, group, or class.
– Lock the student workstation computer screen, keyboard, and mouse and send a visual message.
– Restart, logoff, or shutdown the student workstation computer by individual, group, or entire class.
• Through the digital transfer function, teachers may stream audio and video files to the workstations, which automatically open
the media assistant, ready for the student to begin the lesson.
• When text and/or picture files are transferred from the console, the relevant application that resides on the student computer
is automatically opened as is the file.
• Teachers may launch -- or launch and copy -- files (including Web sites) to the student workstations, by individual, group, or
class. Each workstation opens the application and file, putting the student on task immediately.
• Instructors have the option of three program transfer modes in normal speed and/or digital transfer, by group. Digital transfer
happens at the speed of the network. Programs may be transferred in stereo or mono.
• The instructor’s monitor provides a replication of the student Media Assistant as soon as the teacher selects a student. While
monitoring, teachers see the student’s display and the mode in which the student is working.
• When intercom is selected, the instructor takes control of the student Media Assistant.
• In the monitor function, the instructor computer also displays a thumbnail version of the student’s monitor. The instructor may
enter collaborate/control of the student workstation through intercom or double click on the thumbnail.
• As part of the monitor function, or on an ad hoc basis, the instructor may initiate a text chat via a separate window that displays
on the student monitor desktop. The student responds on a drop-down text window, which opens when the teacher initiates the
chat. The chat may be in a private (instructor-student) or public (group/class) mode.
• The Lab 300 incorporates an automatic scanning mode for monitoring each student position, by group, in turn, for the amount
of time you select. Student monitoring includes the concurrent thumbnail display of the student monitor at the teacher console.
The Lab monitors audio/video through the Media Assistant audio, or audio/video/ computer simultaneously through PC remote.
• In a teacher login dialog, a Media Assistant log file may be selected, and the teacher may collect information on the Media
Assistant usage in the lab. All of the file openings and savings – by student – are then saved to a log file in the teacher’s
computer.
• When working within the Lab 300 audio system, all student workstation computer audio, including audio from local or
instructor-transferred CD-ROM, is channeled through the student media player/recorder to the student’s headset. Any audio
may be recorded at the workstation and/or monitored at the console.
• The Lab 300 user interface displays visual indicators of the lab’s status – by individual or group as soon as a group window
or student window is selected. The teacher immediately sees in which function the group/student is working: Normal,
All/Group Call, Source, Monitor, and/or Intercom.
• The default file format in the digital collect function is MP3. This format allows the teacher to collect student recordings faster
and saves significant storage space.
• To facilitate playback and programming of Media Assistant files and to digitize analog media, a Media Assistant Solo version
is included in the Lab 300 teacher console.
• The Lab 300 is the only analog/digital lab with total factory-developed software support. Totally expandable, the lab 300 may
be an analog lab today, analog/digital lab tomorrow, and a full virtual digital lab – with fully integrated management and
authoring software – whenever you and your budget are ready.
• You have the option to add analog video distribution and analog video lesson sources to the Lab 300 lab, and get a four-
source simultaneous video exchange system – without losing any other functions of the lab. During video transfer, the same
group, monitor, and intercom functions for audio/PC control apply.
• When analog video is used as a program source, an integrated video overlay window automatically opens on the teacher’s
screen. Teachers see the program the students are seeing, without accessing a separate function.
• The Lab 300 dual teacher option allows two teachers to share every function of the lab, with maximum flexibility. Either
teacher may select any student for monitoring or intercom, both teachers have total access to all of the media resources, and
neither is limited to one or two of the lesson groups.
• As part of an annual software upgrade package, software changes and enhancements made to the Lab 300 are offered to
users at an annual fee. All upgrades issued during the year(s) the package is in effect are automatically made available to
users.
• You add playback electronics and peripherals when you – and your budget – are ready. The Lab 300 hardware/ software hub,
lets you take advantage of the hardware and courseware currently available – and yet to come.
• You get the best factory warranty (two year on the system, five years on console circuit boards) and the best factory guarantee
of parts availability (minimum seven years) of any system on the market.
